Esther was traveling with the Parker family and Mary Ann Quinney. Mary Ann said that Esther had all the toes on one foot frozen. They hurt so much that she asked Mary Ann to cut them off, one every day, until they were gone. Mary Ann put axle grease on them to help them heal.
